It had been far too long since Mia had had time to herself, every damned day this year so far had been spent writing letters to her mother who for the first time in Mia's life actually wanted some involvement in what her daughter was getting up to. She'd acted like a psychologists for the past two weeks, hearing every stupid, petty sob story of the breakup of the century. Ian had of course left again, it was inevitable, the third breakup this year alone, but he came crawling back each time and as alwas the wedding plans had continued on. Only, the wedding was over now... Had been for quite sometime and still, even after taking vowels before 'God' the pair still acted like children, still fought. Ian and his brood would no doubt return to the Irish cottage by the time Next Monday rolled around.
Ian was a tall man, lazy and by no means well off, he lived of others, had no real job other than sitting at a small desk in some werehouse offices right off into City of Wexford, the county in which Mia now lived in with her newly seperated mother... The non-believer. Or rather the non-tolerent. Though as of New Years it seemed her mother was a little more accepting of her daughters powers, it seemed the more she found that could benefit her the easier the idea became. It had taken less than a week for her mother to catch onto the fact Mia was underage and would not be able to do any magic outside school until after her seventeenth.

With the newest letter in her hands. Mia rolled her eyes and sunk down against a large rock beside the lake. It was a clear day, the sky was cloudly, the ground for once not damp with mud ready to reach and grab passers by and sink them knee deep in the horrid filth. In other words, it was perfect for Quidditch, too exhausted to even consider running down to her dorm to collect her broom let alone actually play a game or just fly. With a groan she flicked her wrist, the piece of lined paper her mother had written on and sent with Mars, her newest pet, was left to soar across the short distance between her and the lake. It floated the biro ink smudging together making it unreadable as the thin paper slowly sunk little by little. With a sigh she let her head fall back to rest of the tip of the grey rock she lent against. One could enjoy spending time alone.

Jason pinched the bridge of his nose as he strolled down to the lake. He had gotten very few hours of sleep the night before, reading 'Jinxes and Their Counter-Jinxes', and he was now regretting it. His headache was almost blinding, he had seen stars as he stepped out of the dark castle and into the bright sun. "I should have stopped at the Infirmary before heading out here." He mumbled. He had already snapped at a Second Year on his way down to breakfast. He was cranky and having a bad headache just made things worse.

As he reached the lakes' edge and pulled of his shoes and socks and let his toes sink into the cool mud. He slowly made his way into the water until he was ankle deep in the icy water. He rubbed his arm where goose bumps had appeared and pulled his wand out from his pocket. He waved it and he felt the water warm up several degrees around him. He found a damp rock protruding from the water and sat down. This allowed his feet to stay wet and his butt to stay dry. It didn't take long for Jason to realize he wasn't alone.

As another dissrupted the peace and trod his way through the water in front of her, Mia glared, icy eyes making sure to watch his every move as he sat down on a large rock that rested in the water. She still refused to look away, even when it was clear he was not doing anything other than sitting across from her. She could see from the school badge on his robes that he was Ravenclaw, even from this far away, but you didn't need to read the house name when the blue was evident on the badge and tie. Her own green tie and badge on full display as she twisted her body, ensuring he knew exactly who she was.

First years, the pests that they were rarely had any respect for the elder students and Mia was in no mood to play the part of helping older student. It wasn't that she ever did anyway but the point of the matter was, it was a nice day, warmer than it had been in a while. Maddie was off somewhere and Brodi Honour was keeping out of sight, along with his fowl little girlfriend. The traitor that she was...

She did not stand but finally opened her mouth, calling across the lake to the boy. "Of all the places in this castle, why here? Can you not go drown yourself in another part of the lake. I'm busy!"

Jason narrowed his eyes and shouted back at the Slytherin. "I don't think it'll be I who will be moving, but I hear there's a nice cliff nearby that you can jump off of!" He turned back to the lake, "If not you, your attitude." He mumbled the last part quietly. He was sure his knuckles were bright white from clutching his wand so tightly. He had overheard several First Years talking about this girl, she was supposedly a real witch. And not of the magical kind. He tried remembering what they had said her name was. Was it Tia?

Feining laughter Mia made sure to be as loud as she could with her sarcastic, short chuckle. "Oh, your a comedian! Brilliant." She smirked, pushing herself from the rock and coming to stand at the shore of the lake, looking out to him. He wasn't far off, she could see him clearly. Ravenclaws! She hated the lot, she had yet to meet one she liked... They were all full of themselves! Hell Brodi was so sure of himself he had hit on almost every girl in the school. Trust Madeline to fall hook, line and sinker for the idiot. But it couldn't be helped, she could see his charm... Smooth talker, good looking and if only a little he had a sense of humour. She thought back on the meeting in North Tower, she had seen a side to him she never thought she'd ever see and he in turn had said a more sensitive her. A rare sight indeed.

"Look child, I'm older, I'm better and I can see how wise it is for you to stay out there where the mean Slytherin can't get you... But any more stupid comment and I shall have no issues with using the most brutal punishment I can find."
Oh, her father would love that. If she used Unforgivables or gruesome spells she was sure she'd be welcomed back with open arms, and the idea of having that horrid mark scolded into her skin did not seem such a bad idea anymore. She could not put up with her Step father and his two daughters, she was glad they were not witches or else she'd suffer their presence here as well as at home. If her father would have her, Mia would be back in London with no care for what her mother did or thought. But she had walked away from him and from his obsession with the Dark Lord, how easy would it be to turn the clocks and change her mind? By now it was too late, she'd burned that bridge and she was almost positive it wasn't that bad. She couldn't follow orders, not by anyone... But it didn't make her any less interested in the Dark Arts.

Purple sparks flew wildly from the tip of his wand as he rose from the rock. "Wise?" He questioned, "You're not afraid of water are you, because it's not very deep, you could just come and get me." He looked down at his feet and sure enough the water was just below his knees. "So feel free to come punish me!" He waded further into the water, his robes becoming soaked. No matter that could be taken care of later.

Mia laughed again, was he egging her on? Surely he didn't think she'd back down? She wasn't afraid of the water, what was in it was a different matter, but she had swam in this lake a thousand times, the more prominent memories were those with Maddie and Kiuru, before that, that made Hufflepuff, Chary and a few others that day they'd been attacked by something in the water after Mia had clipped her hand over a rock and gashed it open. She dreaded to think where Chary was, she'd dissapeared one summer and just never came back, the first friend she had ever had and the one of three people who could split the blame for the Maddie's new found life... Not that it had much to do with Chary, Mia had been the one to sneak out, the one to find the information on Polyjuice Potion, the one to sneak ingredients from Vampires and Hags in the Hogs Head. It had largely been her own fault. Merlin knew she had tried to fix it, even going so far as donating her blood to her beloved friend. So far as she knew, Maddie had not killed a soul.

"I've swam to the bottom of the lake, before you were even a name on the registers here. Don't test me." She told him, still stood on the bank. She wasn't getting dirty, not without good reason and a silly little boy was not good enough. She crossed her arms. Her wand was not even out yet. Probably not her best move but she wasn't afraid of him, he was a kid, so why get a wand out when she had faced whiny brats before?

A small smile played across Maddie's face as she walked across the shore of the lake. Summer had always been her favorite season. The hot weather had always appealed to her. And yet, it was something that she was denied as a child. Her father never allowed to her to play outside, insisting it was childish, that that Madeline had a million better things to do other than go outside and get dirty like any normal little kid

He had insisted. Because, of course, Madeline wasn't bound to be normal. The half-vampire shook her head lightly, a bit angry at this before giving a soft sigh. A thousand thoughts and memories ran through her mind, untill she had heard something.

"Look, child..." A rather annoyed voice had began to tell someone off. Maddie didn't have to think twice to realize that his voice was none other than her best friend Mia's. Her smile quickly widened to a grin as she drew nearer, just in time to hear the boy in the water's comment.

"Well then," Maddie started as she made her way towards Mia, her voice loud enough just so she'd gain attention from those that were around. Maddie walked gracefully, running a hand through her bright blonde hair.

"Someone's a bit mouthy, yes? I wouldn't get too cocky over there." She warned, smirking a little as she eyed the first year up. Ravenclaw, no doubt, Madeline decided.

As a recognisable voice called her attention away from the pathetic brat in front of her, she smiled to herself but did not turn her head and instead waited till she could feel the presence of her Vampire friend beside her before looking, the grin now spreading completely over her features. "Hello." She almost purred, now let see the brat and his cocky mouth start. Two Slytherin's and neither of them had ever held back in a fight before. If the kid was looking to pick a fight with older students, he had scored big time with Madeline there as well.

"Yes, he is a bit on the cocky side. I'll soon wipe that smart little grin off his face." She wasn't even sure if he was grinning but all the same, it seemed to fit and along with earlier thoughts of her father, this was something Mia had heard him say a few dozen times before. Above them, the clouds shifted and covered the sun, now shaded, Mia was able to see clearer, the sun had been blinding her slightly before, especially as it reflected from the Lake. "What is it with Ravenclaw's and thinking a few extra brain cells will get them anywhere..." She stepped closer to the edge, her toes now poised over the water, she looked ready to step in, she wouldn't of course; he wasn't worth getting wet and cold.

Her eyes narrowed and her voice became darker, almost hissing where as before she had spoken quite calmly. "You know what you really need, boy?" She quirked a brow at him, leaving a small pause for him to answer in, "You need a good lesson on what it’s like to feel pain. Real pain, not some stupid school scrap you have with your friends... Pain like you can't even imagine... I'll teach you if you’re not careful. Now stop wasting my time and get lost!" The last word echoed over the lake, it wasn't shouted but said so loudly and sharply that it seemed to bounce around them and still her wand was not drawn.

Two against one? Now this wasn't fair! The other girl seemed to come out of no were, plus the fact that she was a Slytherin didn't help. The icy water was making his toes numb and it was getting hard to breathe. He waved his wand and the water bubbled slightly as it warmed up again. "Called upon reinforcements did you?" Jason tried to keep his teeth from chattering, "Didn't feel like you could take me?"

Jason tried to go deeper (The water now up to his armpits) but he knew if he did, he'd end up in the Infirmary drinking a cauldron of Pepperup Potion. He felt something brush up against his leg but ignored it, putting it off as seaweed. "If you don't think you could take on a First Year alone that's fine!" "I'll tell the rest of the Ravenclaw First Years not to worry so much about you!"

Now he had gone from silly pest to down right dangerous. Having younger students fear her made life easier, and she was by no means scared of this kid, he probably knew as much magic as her left little finger. She had always under estimated younger students, even when she had been one herself she had not believed them or even herself to be capable of this. She grabbed Maddie's hand with her right hand and pulled her so they were now so close they were shoulder to shoulder. "Scared of you?" She laughed loudly and turned to Maddie, the amusement evident on her face. For a Ravenclaw he sure was stupid, if she had called for reinforcements she'd have her wand out or have actually called Maddie. She shook her head.

"Little boy, if I were afraid of you I'd have a wand out... You are about as scary as a Flobberworm." But as he waded in deeper she rolled her eyes. "And so says the coward who is currently putting more space between us. Have you no manners at all? If you start a fight you are supposed to finish it, not run away." She hissed at him, blue eyes flashing dangerously.

Maddie smiled lightly, shaking her head a little at what was going on. The first year would have seemed a little brave to her if he hadn't of been walking away while he was running his mouth. "How rude." She commented, frowning a little. "The least you could do is introduce yourself before walking away." Maddie added, with a small playful smirk. He was obviously scared. Of girls, of slytherins, of what, she wasn't exactly sure.

"Called in reinforcements?" She asked, raising both brows at this statement, not helping but to smile a little herself with Mia laughing at her side. "You're not being serious, are you?" She further questioned, laughing a little. Maddie couldn't believe how foolish he was beginning to sound. As if Mia would ever really need back up on torturing a first year. Yeah, right.

"Go tell your friends, have at it." Maddie said, rolling her eyes a little at this meaningless threat. She was almost sure that even if he had told his house, his fellow first years about what 'cowards' the girls were they wouldn't believe him. Not in the slightest. Not with all the rumors that had been flying around about Maddie, the half vampire, Maddie who had been supposed to have her dark mark already.
